Those humans that do remain are pigment-less albino creatures that roam the night destroying what remnants that may exist of the previous civilization. Neville, who had worked on an antidote to the virus, is one of their main targets. By day, he searches for their nests while they sleep. He comes across a small band of survivors, mostly children, but which includes two adults. Having injected himself with his experimental serum several years before, Neville in fact may carry the immunities needed to reverse the creatures' condition. The only question is whether he can survive their constant attacks long enough to prove it.

I won't spoil the ending, but the symbolism hits you over the head a bit too hard. Most of the other complaints have been listed, but a couple more that bugged me included the way the stunt driver of the motorcycle clearly had different hair–color and style–than Heston, and the rather pathetic "persecution" of the protagonist when the mutants have him in the cart and are hauling him away. I think they threw a few pieces of paper at him and even (gasp) touched his shirt–though not enough to mess it up or even "untuck" it. (Quotation marks have been added so that the spell checker of IMDb won't try to get me to replace it with "unstuck")<br/><br/>Overall, it's fun to see this and compare it to I am Legend, but really, there's not much comparison. Also–I don't remember anywhere in the movie addressing the issue of all the animals. In I am Legend Will Smith's character has a dog, but aside from thinking I heard a bird or two, were they all dead?
This movie is thought-provoking and frightening. At the same time it is entertaining and fascinating in the same wayRomero's "Dead" trilogy. The film is a comment on man's responsibilitythe highest life-form on the planet. It could also be interpretedthe struggle of the individual against the influence of the faceless society of today. It is actually quite dated, but I like that aspect of it. The setting of 1970's Los Angeles is unsettling enough, but with the city a ghost-town it becomes eerie and silent like an ancient tomb or pyramid. I think many Apocalyptic films borrowed the ideas in this movie and ran with them. This film is a re-telling of a story which had been filmed before with Vincent Price. The older version focused on the vampiric element of the antagonists. I had heard that a re-make was in the works. I could see James Cameron and "Arnold".

In the case of the film title, Omega indicates that Robert Neville is the last remaining human on earth. It is an infrared lamp. The gun is equipped with an early nightvision scope that detects infrared light projected by this lightsource and reflected by the objects. Preparing the leave Los Angeles, Neville returns to his apartment to pick up Lisa only to find that she has turned and brought the family with her. Neville is captured and made to watch while the family destroys everything in his apartment. Neville breaks free of his captors, grabs the bottle of blood from his refrigerator, and escapes, taking Lisa with him. Although it is still dark, they run outside. Matthias calls to Lisa, and Neville tries to shoot him, but his gun jams. Noticing Zachary's spear near his feet, Matthias picks it up and hurls it at Neville, severely wounding him in the middle of his chest and sending him reeling backwards into a fountain. Bleeding profusely, Neville calls to Lisa for help, but she collapses on the ground, unable to break her bond with the family. After the sun has risen, Dutch (<a href="/name/nm0467178/">Paul Koslo</a>) and the children arrive to pick up Neville and Lisa. Dutch finds Neville hanging onto the fountain, the water red with his blood. Wordlessly, Neville gives Dutch the bottle of his blood. With his dying breath, he whispers, "Lisa". Dutch lifts Lisa from the ground and places her in the truck. "Well, let's move, kids", he says, "We've got a long way to go." In the final scene, one of the children fetches Neville's cap from the water and lays it respectfully on the side of the fountain. The camera then pans to Neville, revealing him hanging from the fountain in a manner similar to that of Christ on the cross. No. Matthias does not appear in Richard Matheson's original novel. He was invented for this film.
